There is a captivating background to the Cambodia casinos that lie just across the border from next door Thailand, in which gambling hall gaming is illegal. Eight gambling halls are situated in a relatively tiny area in the city of Poipet in Cambodia. This collection of Cambodia gambling halls is in a perfect spot, a three to 4 hour trip from Bangkok and Macao, the two biggest betting locations in Asia. Cambodia gambling halls do a thriving business with Thai blue-collar workers and visitors from Malaysia, Japan, South Korea, and Singapore, with just a couple of Westerners. The astonishing income gained from the casinos ranges from $7.5 million to over 12.5 million dollars, and there are a few limitations constraints for casino ownership. Ownership is presumed to be mostly Thai; still, financial sources are cryptic. The borders are formally open from 09:00 to 17:00, and even though visas are supposedly required to pass, there are ways around this, as is true of many borders.
The first Cambodia gambling halls opened in Phnom Penh in 1994, but were forced to close in the late nineties, leaving only a single casino in the capital, the Naga Resort. The Naga, a stationary barge gambling den, highlights one hundred and fifty one armed bandits and 60 table games. The Naga casino never closes with 42 tables of mini-punto banco, 4 tables of twenty-one, 10 of roulette, 2 of Caribbean Stud Poker, and a single table each of Pai-Gow and Tai-Sai.
The 1st gambling hall in Poipet, the Holiday Palace, premiered in 1999 and the Golden Crown soon opened. There are 150 slot machine games and five tables at the Golden Crown and one hundred and four slot machines and sixty eight table games at the Holiday Palace. The newest Holiday Palace Casino and Resort features three hundred one armed bandits and seventy table games and the Princess Hotel and Casino, also in Poipet, has 166 one armed bandits and ninety six gaming tables, including eighty seven punto banco (the most popular game), Fan Tan, and Pai Gow. Also, there is the Casino Tropicana, with one hundred and thirty five slot machines and sixty six of the familiar tables, as well as a single table of Casino Stud Poker. Another one of the 8 casinos in Poipet, also a part of a hotel, is the Princess Casino with one hundred and sixty six slots and ninety seven table games. The Star Vegas Casino is is located in an international resort and hotel building that features numerous luxuries aside from the casino, which offers ten thousand sq.ft. of 130 one armed bandits and 88 tables.
