There is an interesting background to the Cambodia gambling halls that lie just across the border from neighboring Thailand, where casino gambling is illegal. Eight gambling halls are situated in a generally small area in the city of Poipet in Cambodia. This group of Cambodia casinos is in a prime destination, a 3 to 4 hour trip from Bangkok and Macao, the 2 biggest wagering locations in Asia. Cambodia casinos do a thriving business with Thai workers and travelers from Malaysia, Japan, South Korea, and Singapore, with just a few Westerners. The phenomenal income gained from the casinos ranges from $7.5 million to more than 12.5 million, and there are a few controls requirements for gambling hall ownership. Ownership is presumed to be largely Thai; however, financial sources are cryptic. The borders are officially open from 0900 to 17:00, and despite the fact visas are apparently necessary to pass, there are means around this, as is true of many borders.
The initial Cambodia casinos premiered in Phnom Penh in the mid nineties, but were required to close in 1998, leaving just a single casino in the capital, the Naga Resort. The Naga, a docked bateau gambling den, contains 150 slots and 60 gaming tables. The Naga gambling den is open all hours with 42 tables of mini-punto banco, 4 tables of blackjack, ten of roulette, two of Caribbean Stud Poker, and 1 each of Pai-Gow and Tai-Sai.
The 1st casino in Poipet, the Holiday Palace, opened in the late nineties and the Golden Crown before long opened. There are one hundred and fifty slot machines and five table games at the Golden Crown and one hundred and four slot machines and sixty eight gaming tables at the Holiday Palace. The newer Holiday Palace Casino and Resort highlights 300 one armed bandits and 70 tables and the Princess Hotel and Casino, also in Poipet, has one hundred and sixty six slots and ninety six gaming tables, including eighty seven baccarat (the most dominant game), Fan Tan, and Pai Gow. Also, there is the Casino Tropicana, with 135 slot machine games and sixty six of the familiar tables, as well as 1 table of Casino Stud Poker. One more of the eight gambling dens in Poipet, also a part of a hotel, is the Princess Casino with one hundred and sixty six one armed bandits and ninety seven table games. The Star Vegas Casino is part of a multinational vacation and hotel compound that contains numerous amenities aside from the gambling hall, which has 10,000 sq.ft. of one hundred and thirty one armed bandits and 88 table games.
